A group of young people from Manor & Castle area in Sheffield spent three days and two nights at the Outdoor Activity Centre at Whiteley Woods in Sheffield last week as part of a joint youth project organised by Manor Castle Development Trust and local housing provider Guinness Northern Counties.
The 24 strong group of 11-14 year olds took part in various activities on the trip, including archery, canoeing and pioneering, some of which they had never tried before, and spent the two nights in the self-catering cabin accommodation provided at the centre.
The project was part of an annual programme of youth projects organised by Manor Castle Development Trust, who have been running playschemes and youth clubs in the Manor Castle area for nine years.
Funding was provided by Guinness Northern Counties which meant the trip was offered to young people who live in the Manor and Castle area for free.
Brian Hamlin, Community Investment Manager for Guinness Northern Counties, said: “We’ve seen a great show of teamwork this week from the group, not only on the fun side doing the activities but on a domestic, everyday level, they’ve all chipped in and worked together to keep the cabin clean and tidy. The activities seemed to be enjoyed by everyone and alongside these, we held some classroom-based awareness sessions in Good Citizenship, which they really seem to have taken on board.”
Tracy Brown, Youth Activity Co-ordinator for Manor Castle Development Trust, said: ”We are really pleased to be working with Guinness Northern Counties and over the last year have built a good partnership with them. We are all working to the same goal and I hope this continues.”
