A summer soccer school funded and organised by local housing provider Guinness Northern Counties is helping to keep youngsters fit and focussed in Westgate, Morecambe.
The free sessions began on 3rd August and continue each Wednesday at 6.30pm until the end of September. Organisers at Guinness Northern Counties are delighted with the response, with 15-20 young people aged from five up to 16 years old attending each week.
Coached by Lee Riley from Morecambe Football Club, each training session lasts 1 hour and takes place at the Park View playing fields.
Guinness Northern Counties Housing Officer, Katherine Lewis, who was involved in setting up the project, said: “The project’s had a very positive outcome for families in the area. Not only has it given the young people involved a focus, parents have also become very involved with many of them coming along each week to support their children and cheer for them. We’ve also seen a positive result in terms of anti social behaviour complaints, there is a noticeable downturn this summer in disturbances reported to us by tenants involving young people.”
The project will end on 24th September with a finale training session and presentation at the Globe Arena, Morecambe, home of Morecambe FC. The group will then be given a tour of the grounds before receiving their certificates of achievement.
