New skills clubs offer Oldham residents a helping hand back into work (29/11/11)

A new Work Club has been set up in Oldham by local housing provider Guinness Northern Counties to help residents gain the skills they need to get them back into work.

Royton Park Hall Work Club began on 17th October, and already has seen a number of residents attending the weekly sessions, which are held from 10am until 1pm every Monday at the association’s community house situated at 25 Seatoller Court.

The work club offers residents help with creating a CV, interview techniques and completing job application forms. Lessons in basic IT skills are also available as part of the work club session, which includes email account set-up, online banking, Skype and Microsoft Office.

The Work Clubs have been funded by Guinness Northern Counties, with support from Guinness Partnership Fund with ongoing applications in place for additional funding from external sources.

The Work Club has proved so successful that a second one is due to launch at the Higginshaw community house in the next month. This club is being delivered in partnership with First Choice Homes.

Guinness Northern Counties’ Community Investment Manager Lisa Duffy, said: I am so pleased with the commitment and dedication of the volunteers involved in making these projects possible. The opportunities that are made available to our residents from being involved in the club are amazing.
