Naomi Campbell, Frank Bruno and Lewis Hamilton are amongst 50 prominent figures featured in a nationally acclaimed photographic exhibition, which launched yesterday at the Showroom Workstation in Sheffield in celebration of Black History Month October 2011,
Lord Mayor of Sheffield Cllr Dr Sylvia Dunkley, senior city council representatives and Community Investment Manager Brian Hamlin from Guinness Northern Counties, joined project partners and renowned photographer John Ferguson to officially open the exhibition.
The exhibition incorporates the Pioneers Exhibition and the Arthur Wharton History Project and will run for four weeks from Tuesday 18th October until 14th November.
Brian Hamlin, Community Investment Manager for Guinness Northern Counties, who are leading the project, said: “This exhibition has shown Sheffield at its best. without the support and co-operation of the council and our partner agencies, this project could not have happened, thank you to all involved and thanks to John for letting us hire the exhibition.”
Black History Month came to Britain in 1987 and has been celebrated nationally every October since. This event highlights the positive aspects of black culture and recognises the contributions that black people have made to Britain and the wider world.
The Black Britannia, Pioneers and Arthur Wharton Exhibitions can be viewed at Showroom Workstation, 15 Paternoster Row, Sheffield, S1 2BX Mon – Friday 8.45am – 8pm and 9am – 3pm on weekends and admission is free.
The exhibitions have only been made possible by the efforts and contributions of various local organisations such as Guinness Northern Counties, Sheffield City Council, South Yorkshire Housing Association, Arches Housing, Pennine Housing 2000, Sheffield Homes, Akzonobel, FURD (Football Unites Racism Divides) and the Showroom Workstation.
