KAOS rules in East Manchester as local young people take part in a fun summer project (08/2011)

Young people in East Manchester enjoyed free sports sessions, art classes and a lesson in graffiti this summer as part of an activity project organised by local housing provider, Guinness Northern Counties.

A total of 16 young people aged 6 to 16 signed up for the project that ran every week day in Openshaw.

Spread over a three-week period during the school summer holidays, the project involved various sports sessions at Wright Robinson Sports College, and a community clean up in Openshaw.

This is the third year the project, which is also funded by Guinness Northern Counties, has been available for local youngsters and sessions began on 25th July 2011 with multisports activities where they could choose the activities they wanted to do, including DJ/MC sessions at Unity Radio, where they wrote their own lyrics for a rap.

The course ended with a presentation on Friday 12th August at the Wright Robinson Sports College in Gorton, where each of the young participants were presented with certificates of achievement. They also received t-shirts, CDs, and sports goodie bags from Guinness Northern Counties.

Anne Worthington, Guinness Northern Counties’ Housing Officer, said: “The course is proving more popular each year and it’s a great way to keep young people busy and engaging with different people. They get so much out of it and really enjoy the different activities each week.”

She added:” I’d like to thank other local organisations for their contributions and support with this project, especially Wright Robinson Sports College for use of their facilities and support with the program.
